The site was selected as a water and coaling station for steam engines on the Santa Fe rail line. The Santa Fe Railroad extended into Indian Territory in 1887. The location was considered perfect because of its high elevation, which allowed trains to easily accelerate downhill when departing the station in either direction. The station was named after the freight agent Edmond Burdick. When early settlers arrived, they decided to name the township Edmond. Now the BNSF freight line runs through the same course which the old Santa Fe rail used to take.

During the great Oklahoma land run during the year 1889, the town of Edmond was able to blossom around the homesteads staked around the Santa Fe station. The population of the city was roughly 394, by the year 1890. A syndicate referred to as the Seminole Town and Development Company prepared the original planning map for the city of Edmond and named the streets after workers and other men connected with the Santa Fe Railroad and the town syndicate. The first officers of the city and mayor were elected in May the year 1889.

Outside the U.S. Post Office in downtown Edmond stands a memorial to the victims of a tragic event within the city's history. Edmond made national news in the month of August 1986 when it was the site of the post office massacre. An ex-postal employee named Patrick Sherrill killed 14 individuals and wounded 6. The crime caused a rash of postal employee murder-suicides all around the nation.

Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller, winner of 7 medals in 1992 and 1996, is from the city of Edmond. Miller is the country's most decorated Olympic gymnast.
