Bixby

Bixby Forklift Parts - Bixby (population 20,884) is a city in the state of Oklahoma, United States. It is a suburb of Tulsa and is situated within both Tulsa and Wagoner counties. The population has grown by 7,500 people during the past 10 years and is amongst the fastest growing communities within the state. Despite its growth the city of Bixby is still called "The Garden Spot of Oklahoma", the location to come for buying fresh produce.

The region was initially inhabited during the latter part of the 1800s by Alexander Posey, the son of Muscogee (Creek) and Scottish parents. Posey, who became a nationally known political satirist, founded a community known as "Posey on Posey Creek." The community had two saloons, a blacksmith and a general store, and by 1895 it had a post office. The city was named after a chairman of the Dawes Commission, Tams Bixby.

During the year 1913 the discovery of oil fields nearby caused growth in Bixby, though the township remained a farming community well into the 20th Century. Cotton, wheat and alfalfa were the main agricultural products until the 1930s, when vegetable production became more significant. Known as a regional shipping center for agricultural produce by railroad, Bixby was dubbed "The Garden Spot of Oklahoma." The railroad shipped cantaloupes, potatoes, turnips, squash, spinach, sweet corn and radishes from the city all around the country. Just recently, these farms have been transformed to producing sod, primarily Bermuda grass. Although just a fraction of people are still working in agriculture, the township still continues on its traditions with the annual "Green Corn Festival" held each summer.

Bixby plays host to many public events at the Washington Irving Park and Arboretum. The park is named for a well-known American author who visited the township in the year 1832. The Washington Irving Park contains a bronze statue of Irving, and the stage of the amphitheatre has been made to resemble the front of Irving's house in Tarrytown, New York. The park entrance gates are replicas of the gates at Irving's estate. Bixby drama students present a dramatization of Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in the park every autumn. The park also hosts the popular "Bixby BBQ & Music Festival" and the "Deutschesfest".
