Norman was established during the Oklahoma Land Rush in 1889 and was incorporated during the year 1891. Norman is home to the largest university within the state, encouraging the development of scientific and technological research businesses in Norman. The University of Oklahoma has a student population of approximately 30,000, and a workforce of nearly 11,000. The research programs of the campus contributed over $277 million to the economy in the year 2009.

With the Louisiana Purchase in the year 1803, the central Oklahoma region became part of the United States. The Creek Nation was relocated to the region now called Norman by the United States Government in the years 1832 to 1833. Creek Nation was one of five Native American tribes which the United States officially recognized via treaty. Prior to the American Civil War the US government began relocating the tribes to Oklahoma.

The National Weather Center place is within the city of Norman in addition to some climate-and-weather-related organizations. The NWC is part of a collaborative effort between the national Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the University of Oklahoma. Norman is a prime place for a planned National Weather Museum.
